PATIENT ADHERENCE TO MEDICATION
By Vince Elliott, Immediate Past President

This Hot News story is directed toward outpatient clinicians. A physician I've worked with, in our health care system, has co-authored an outstanding article on patient adherence to prescribed medications. By the way, adherence is the preferred word, not compliance.

The article, "Adherence to Medication", was published in the August 4 issue of THE NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE and was authored by Lars Osterberg, MD, a physician in the VA Palo Alto Health Care System; and Terrence Blaschke, MD from the nearby Stanford University Medical Center.

If you work in an outpatient setting, you know as I do, getting patients to take their medications is the single most vexing and important issue we struggle with, as we care for and treat out patients.

Ask your medical librarian to get you a copy of this article, or log onto THE JOURNAL's website, and read it: www.nejm.org.
