The National Institutes of Health Offers Federal Employees in Designated Research Areas $35,000 in Annual Student Loan Repayment Beginning September 1

Federal employees researching in certain medical fields may be eligible for the National Institutes of Health Loan Repayment Programs, which will begin accepting applications September 1.

Selected applicants must make a two-year commitment and, in turn, NIH will award up to $35,000 per year in student loan repayments. In addition, NIH will pay 39% of the repayments to cover federal taxes and may reimburse for state taxes resulting from these repayments.

NIH offers five loan repayment programs:

  • Clinical Research
  • Clinical Research for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds
  • Contraception and Infertility Research
  • Health Disparities
  • Pediatric Research

"The NIH Loan Repayment Programs offer an easy and effective way for research scientists to focus more on research and less on repaying student loans," said Dr. Norka Ruiz Bravo, Deputy Director for Extramural Research. "Since 2002, nearly 4,000 qualified health professionals have benefited from more than $225 million disbursed in loan repayment support. Through these programs, the NIH has opened doors for many young scientists to launch careers in research without the burden of student loan debt."

Those interested must possess a doctoral-level degree and dedicate 50% or more of their time to research funded by government entities (federal, state and local) or a U.S. non-profit organization. Applicants must also have educational loan debt equal to or exceeding 20% of their base salary. U.S. citizens, permanent residents or U.S. nationals are eligible.

Applications must be received by Dec. 1 at 8:00 p.m. EST.

NIH consists of 27 Institutes and Centers and is a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. NIH is the primary federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research.
