VA Response To Commission Report
(November 1, 2004)

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to report that Secretary Principi accepts and supports the intent of all recommendations submitted by the National Commission on VA Nursing. The attached document provides VA’s response to the recommendations. In its final report, the Commission clearly communicated that the “new realities” of nursing demand aggressive strategies so that we may ensure VA is an undisputed employer of choice.

Many of the implementation strategies outlined by the Commission will require immediate action to launch long-term initiatives to support patient and staff focused work environments. Each of the Commission’s implementation strategies and the corresponding accountability, timelines and metrics will require an in-depth evaluation and may require modification of our current internal structures and processes to ensure alignment. Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has convened a steering committee to oversee work related to the recommendations of the Commission.

VA nursing employees are the mainstay of health care delivery system. I look forward to working with you to address the recommendations outlined by the Commission.
