NOVA Award Criteria - January 2010

The Veterans Award:

This award is presented to an individual veteran, group of veterans, or an organization in recognition of dedication to improving the healthcare of Veterans through the demonstration of one of the following:
  • Active participation with legislative issues through writing campaigns, speaking engagements, and/or publication of literature which positively influence change
  • Personal sacrifice through volunteerism with underserved groups of veterans
  • Active involvement with special interest groups who seek to improve the quality of healthcare for veterans
  • The nominee does not need to be a member of NOVA, but must be nominataed by a NOVA member or chapter.
The Professional Nurse Award for Clinical Excellence:

This award is presented to a registered nurse who has made an outstanding contribution to the nursing care of veterans through excellence in clinical practice. Examples of each area must be addressed:
  • Serving as a role model or mentor for other nurses.
  • Improving nursing care of the veteran through implementing best practices or evidence-based practice.
  • Serving as an advocate for veterans' healthcare by advancing patient care, legislative action, or participating in local/VISN/national nursing activities.
  • The nominee MUST be a NOVA member and be nominated by a NOVA member or chapter.
The Professional Nurse Award for Leadership:

This award is presented to a registered nurse who has made an outstanding contribution to nursing within the VA system through their leadership abilities. Examples of each area must be addressed:
  • Advocating or advancing the use of registered nurses within their medical center/VISN/system.
  • Promoting advanced education and/or certification for VA nurses.
  • Advancing evidence-based practice and/or nursing research with an emphasis on improving the nursing care to veterans.
  • The nominee must be a NOVA member but does not have to be in a managerial position. Must be nominated by a NOVA member or chapter.
The Barbara Chambers Award:

This award is presented to an individual NOVA member or NOVA chapter for outstanding contributions to NOVA through the following:
  • Active leadership roles within NOVA at national or local level.
  • Significant contributions which advance the mission/vision/strategic plan of NOVA.
  • The nominee must be a current or former member of NOVA and must be nominated by a NOVA member or chapter.
The Vernice Ferguson Award:

This award is presented to an individual or group for significant contributions to the NOVA Foundation in order to further the mission of the Foundation through examples of:
  • Devoting volunteer time to a specific educational/research program and/or fundraising activity.
  • Contributing monetarily to the NOVA Foundation.
  • Demonstrating/Expressing a passion for VA nurses and veterans through fundraising activities.
  • The nominee does not need to be a member of NOVA and must be nominated by a member of the NOVA Board of Directors or a member of the NOVA Foundation Board of Directors.
The Silver Star Chapter Award:

This award is presented to an outstanding local NOVA chapter. NOVA chapters are the backbone of the organization. Local chapters are "where the action is". Members meet, share ideas, have fun, learn from educational speakers, share nursing stories and innovative ideas, enjoy food, plan legislative activities and carry on the work of the NOVA. This award recognizes "grassroots" efforts by chapters. The Chapter needs to be recognized by the NOVA National Office as an active chapter (bylaws on file, at least 10 members, etc.). For this award, the Chapter needs to fill out the application (click the link below), and send it to the National Office, 47595 Watkins Island Square, Sterling, VA 20165, by June 1, 2010.

A call for nominations will appear in News From NOVA at least nine months prior to the Annual Meeting. It is now time to nominate a colleague for one of the 2010 NOVA awards! The deadline for submission is June 1, 2010.

Nominations for awards submissions should be sent to Susan Dove, NOVA Executive Director, at sdove@vanurse.org. Nominees must consent to accept the award.

The Awards Committee consists of the NOVA Board of Directors. One Board Member will be in charge of the award selection process. The Board of Directors will review all nominations and select the award recipients, based on the award criteria, at least four months prior to the Annual Meeting. Current members of the NOVA Board of Directors are not eligible to receive awards.

NOVA National Office will notify award recipients. NOVA awards are presented during the Annual Meeting; and this year, will be awarded at the 2010 Meeting in Washington, DC, October 28-30. Awards will not necessarily be presented each year for each category. Award recipients will also be announced in the winter issue of News From NOVA. A plaque will be presented to the Award recipients at the Annual Meeting. A picture of the award recipients with their plaques may be placed in the winter issue of News From NOVA.
