ANNOUNCING THE
NOVA Foundation Nightingale Award
|
|
A Christian universalist, Nightingale believed that God had called her to be a nurse. She came to prominence for her pioneering work in nursing during the Crimean War, where she tended to wounded soldiers. She was dubbed "The Lady with the Lamp" after her habit of making rounds at night.
Nightingale laid the foundation of professional nursing with the establishment, in 1860, of her nursing school at St. Thomas' Hospital in London, the first secular nursing school in the world. The Nightingale Pledge taken by new nurses was named in her honor, and the annual International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on her birthday (Wikipedia).

Today, the modern VA nurse takes on many challenges in balancing a next generation life style with next generation medical challenges. As we end an era of caring for WWI veterans and continue to care for those who served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War and other areas abroad, we prepare for a new generation of challenges, scars, and perils for our brave men and women who are currently serving and returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Advanced education for our VA nurses is more important now than ever before and the Nurses Organization of Veterans Affairs (NOVA) Foundation understands this crusade as much as any organization.
