In 1982, NOVA was included at the Oversight Hearings conducted by Senator Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ) in Arizona during January. NOVA registered nurses from the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center in Phoenix were joined by colleagues from Prescott and Tucson. They testified at this hearing by outlining the major nursing problems at their hospitals, while including NOVA's national scope and goals. This was a significant event, as it was the first time that registered nurses who see and care for patients daily had the opportunity to give testimony to a member of the United States Senate.

Six members of the Carl T. Hayden VAMC Chapter of NOVA attended the 25th Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, and had the opportunity to attend a Congressional briefing held at the Capitol -- listening to remarks by Senator Daniel Akaka, Ranking Member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, as he addressed NOVA members and Congressional staff. Following the briefing, they met with legislative assistants for Senator John McCain, Senator John Kyl, Representative John Shadegg, and Representative Jeff Flake.
