NOVA Foundation Nursing Research Announcement
PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT
Request for Proposals: $5,000 Research Grant

Purpose: The NOVA Foundation in collaboration with the DAV Charitable Trust will fund a nursing research grant for $5,000 during 2007. Funding is available for projects related to developing better ways to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease and to promote health in veterans. Pilot projects, dissertations or master's theses will be considered. Applications should demonstrate adequate support for successful completion of projects.
Submission Deadlines: Submission deadline is April 30, 2007. Proposals must include all information requested in the guidelines on this date or they will not be considered for funding.
Research Foci: Applications submitted under this initiative should be relevant to advancing nursing practice in the VA. The focus should be patient-centered and relevant to improving the health of veterans and their families. High priority research topics are listed below.

- Topics related to deployment health for OIF and OEF returning military personnel or their families to maximize their physical, mental, and social functioning and quality of life for veterans and/or to promote family reintegration and adjustment.
- Studies related to improving care for women veterans.
- Methods for improving, maintaining and/or preventing decline in functional status of veterans with emphasis on the use of rehabilitation and prosthetics.
- Studies related to the innovative assessment, care and rehabilitation of veterans who suffered poly trauma and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Protection Human Subjects: Proposals submitted for funding should address human protection concerns including HIPAA issues involved in the proposed study. A proposed consent form should be included with the application. However, approval of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and VA Research and Development Committee can be submitted after funding decisions are made. No funds will be released until the IRB information has been received by NOVA Foundation.
Eligibility: Nurse Investigators who hold a VA appointment of at least 5/8 time are eligible to apply. Applicants are not required to be NOVA members, but membership is encouraged. Co-investigators, consultants and support staff may be non-VA employees.
Proposal Review: Proposals will undergo review for scientific merit and responsiveness to this announcement.
Application Instructions
The narrative should be written according to the following outline. Length must not exceed five (5) typewritten pages, excluding appendices and references, single-spaced within paragraphs and double-spaced between. Use 12 point font type.

Grant Application Instructions
|
|
A. Abstract
Provide an abstract of up to 500 words of the proposed project on a separate page. Include the research problem, significance to the care of veterans, research design, setting, sample and proposed methodology. This page is not counted in the page limit for the proposal.
B. Specific Aims:
State the objective(s) of the proposed project. Keep in mind that the research project should focus on improving the care of veterans. Include specific research questions and/or hypotheses (if appropriate). State the long-term goal of the proposed project. For example, if the proposed project is a pilot study, describe how the acquired knowledge will be used, e.g., submit full proposal for funding consideration.
C. Background and Significance:
Include current literature that supports the proposed project and assists in the clarification of the purpose and procedures. Include a theoretical or conceptual framework. State the specific nursing or health care problem(s) the research addresses including the rationale for the objective(s) of the proposed project. Describe the impact of the proposed study on improving the quality of healthcare for veterans and how this study relates to improving nursing care of veterans.

E. Facilities/Resources:
Describe the facility or facilities involved and summarize the resources available to support the proposed project. If the researcher is a novice, adequate support to assure success of the project is required. Include letters of support from organizational elements (e.g., Facility Director, Nurse Executive, nursing staff, other services, etc.) affected by the research. Describe the role of each participant in the research project.
F. References:
List references cited using APA Format. Not included in page limit.
G. Appendices:

- Use VA Form 10-1313-3 and 10-1313-4 to list all budget items for which funding is requested. On 10-1313-4 include a description of funds contributed from other sources if applicable. Justification of all budget items must be included in VA Form 10-1313-4. Include a description of the role of each participant on the research team.
- Use VA Forms 10-1313-5/6 to include a biographical sketch for the PI, co-investigators and any consultants.
- Include letters of support (e.g., co-investigators, organization leadership, dissertation chair, etc.).
- Include a Gantt chart providing a detailed time frame for successful completion of the research project.
- Copy of the IRB approval and the VA Subcommittee approvals are required prior to funding. Include a copy of the Consent Form if appropriate.
- Include copies of instruments or interview guides.

H. Review Criteria: A number of factors are considered in determining funding:
|
|
- Purpose of funds requested. Provide clear evidence that findings will contribute to improved prevention, diagnosis or treatment of veterans.
- Scientific Merit Research objectives, hypotheses, questions and methodology must be scientifically correct.
- Demonstration of Ongoing Contribution. Investigators should describe how findings from this project will contribute to future studies and support ongoing research in this area.
- Financial information. Funds should be used for conducting research that directly benefits veterans. Are the project budget and operating costs reasonable and justified?
- Number of veterans who will benefit. Estimate the number of veterans who will benefit from findings of the study.
- Prior history of funding from NOVA and grants from other Foundations and entities. How many grants has the applicant received and what is the total amount provided by the NOVA Foundation to support the project? Is there an ongoing plan to solicit funding from additional sources?
