NOVA Statement on VA Nurse Shooting in Minneapolis

January 25, 2026, Washington, D.C. As the professional nursing organization representing Department of Veterans Affairs nurses, NOVA is saddened by the recent shooting of Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System.

Violence has no part in our society and is unacceptable in any context.

Nurses are highly skilled professionals committed to delivering compassionate care, and upholding ethical standards that require safeguarding the lives and dignity of every individual.

NOVA continues to support and stand by all nurses, especially our colleagues at the Minneapolis VA.

We call for an end to violence within our communities and encourage the Administration, law enforcement, and Congress to demonstrate leadership through their actions.
