This program will improve my competency because I will be able to summarize changes in the promotion process for VA nurses, including identifying the revised qualification standards for RNs and APNs.  I will be able to describe a positive impact on patient care with the use of phototherapy provided to treat veterans’ skin conditions.  I will be able to provide care to veteran family members by describing the organ and tissue donation process in the VA.  I will be able to provide a positive impact on patient care by identifying care for patients with cognitive impairment.  I will be able to provide a positive impact on patient care by identifying ways that I can work with members of Veterans Service Organizations and legislative assistants/Members of Congress to strengthen partnerships to work together to benefit veterans and VA nurses.  I will be able to identify strategies to improve nurse safety in today’s workplace.  I will be able to provide a positive impact on nursing staff members by sharing information on self-care practices for VA nurses.  I will be able to identify the priorities of the Office of Nursing Services to strengthen the nursing workforce within the VA.  I will be able to identify the priorities of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs that impact nursing and my facility.

How I Will Share Knowledge Gained:

I will implement at least one new idea that I learned at this conference in my work setting.  In addition, I will share the knowledge I have gained by:

  • Presenting an in service for my peers/nursing staff in the facility.
  • Sharing information during informal discussions with my peers/nursing staff in the facility.
  • Developing a poster for my peers/nursing staff in the facility.
