Message from Former VHA Chief Nurse Christopher Saslo, DNS, APRN-BC-FAANP, (Retired) Assistant Undersecretary for Health Patient Care Services/Chief Nursing Officer for VHA The most recent shooting by ICE involving a VA Nurse, Alex Pretti, has touched many of us; even deeper than before. As a Nurse for 41 years and a recently retired Chief Nurse for the Veterans health administration, I can only imagine the anguish, anger and fear so many are experiencing from this event. As a nurse, I cannot imagine working so hard to save the lives of our nation’s heroes just to then be torn down in a senseless moment. Having spent 31 years of my career in VA before retiring, I have worked alongside many nurses in many settings. To witness what has happened has left me as shaken as you all must be feeling. I encourage all of you, as nurses and human beings, to follow your conscience and reach out to our nation’s leaders to ensure your voice is heard. This can mean so many things including calling or writing your representatives in congress, talking with one another and recognizing the absolute need to ensure that you are safe, supported and knowledgeable about your rights and responsibilities. While we each have our own political views, it is more important than ever that we join in solidarity with one another and recognize that we are the loudest and most trusted workforce in this nation. Together we can help bring change, but only if we unite together and focus on the genuine love and kindness that we hold in our hearts and give to those we serve. May you be blessed with calm, be strong in voice and never stop being proud of being a nurse. My heart breaks and I pray we find peace.
