"When I Call", a poem by Karen Blythe

Posted By Administration, Friday, March 3, 2023
When I call and start the conversation with a loud voice and several unkind words, what am I really seeking?

When I call with vague symptoms, unable to describe my feelings, what am I asking for?

When I call and have so many issues, it is hard for you to decide where to start, what am I really looking for?

When I call with a sob in my voice and a full bottle of pills ready to end it all, what am I requiring of you?

A soft word,
A listening heart,
A kind tone,
Compassion,
intentional silence ,
Sitting with me while I consider my situation ,

An offering of not only medical advice, an appointment or a referral,
I need to be heard, to matter, and to not feel so alone.

So, even though you have metrics to meet and other callers to attend, remember that in this moment, I need your care and attention.

You received my call for a reason, provide a safe place for me to be during this season.

Be thoughtful and considerate, even if I am not.

Listen with empathy and instill courage so I know someone cares.

I am looking for compassion and courtesy so please remember, I served our country and we are all free, so please, help me.
